About the Eight Brocades
Eight Brocades is an internal and external yogic exercise regime that aids in the development of the Three Treasures of ching, qi, and shen. The first four exercises are performed directly prior to the meditation period and the second four right afterward.
Eight distinct therapies function within the exercises for developing optimal health, increasing longevity, and achieving immortality:
- The first therapy involves the use of massagesuch as the patting and pressing aspect of Beat the Heavenly Drum, the pressing activity within Shake the Heavenly Pillar, the rubbing of the kidneys and heating of the hands in Rub the Court of the Kidneys, and the massaging of the bubbling well cavities in Grasping with Hooks.
- The second therapy uses sound, as in the tapping of the Heavenly Drum, listening to the breath, hearing the sound of ku ku, and using the five half coughs.
- The third is the aspect of visualization, as in imagining a fire burning in the lower stomach and producing light in the yu chen cavity, and imagining the qi circulating in the body.
- The fourth is the method of twisting and stretching, as seen in Shake the Heavenly Pillar, The Single Pass and Double Pass Windlass, Supporting Heaven, and Grasping with Hooks.
- The fifth is the method of breath control, of which four main types are used: Cleansing Breath (Ching Hsi), Natural Breathing (Tzu Hsi), Tortoise Breathing (Kuei Hsi), and Closing the Breath (Pi Qi).
- The sixth therapy is that of swallowing, which begins with the saliva and later on the breath itself.
- The seventh therapy is the use of meditative (ching tso) techniques.
- The eighth therapy is the circulation of qi through the jen mo and tu mo meridians (hsiao chou t’ien, or the Lesser Heavenly Circuit). The Lesser Heavenly Circuit is the actual goal for Eight Brocades practice.
